How Age Difference Is Calculated

An age difference is the exact span of time between two dates of birth. The calculator counts forward from the earlier date to the later one: first in complete years, then complete months, and finally the remaining days. It also shows the total number of days, which is useful when you need a single precise figure.

Worked Example

Suppose Person A was born on 14 March 1992 and Person B was born on 30 August 1995.

• From 14 March 1992 to 14 March 1995 is 3 full years.
• From 14 March 1995 to 14 August 1995 is 5 full months.
• From 14 August 1995 to 30 August 1995 is 16 days.

So the age difference is 3 years, 5 months, and 16 days, or 1,264 days in total (about 180 weeks). Person A is the older of the two, and this gap stays the same for their whole lives, even though their ages as a proportion change over time.

Why Months Can Be Tricky

Months have different lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days), so an age gap in "months and days" depends on which months fall in between. For example, from 20 March to 5 May is 1 month and 15 days: one full month to 20 April, then 15 more days to 5 May. That's 46 days in total. Counting by total days avoids this ambiguity completely, which is why the calculator shows both.

Leap years add one more detail. A span that includes 29 February has one extra day, which the total-days result accounts for automatically.
