The Birth Year Ranges Used

  • Greatest Generation: 1901–1927
  • Silent Generation: 1928–1945
  • Baby Boomers: 1946–1964
  • Generation X: 1965–1980
  • Millennials: 1981–1996
  • Generation Z: 1997–2012
  • Generation Alpha: 2013–2024
  • Generation Beta: 2025–2039

The ranges from the Silent Generation through Generation Z follow the boundaries used by Pew Research Center. The ranges for Generation Alpha and Generation Beta are more recent and less settled. Generation Beta starting in 2025 follows the widely reported definition from social researcher Mark McCrindle; some writers start Generation Alpha in 2010 instead of 2013.

Born on a Boundary Year?

Someone born in 1996 counts as a Millennial here, while someone born in 1997 is Generation Z, even though they may have grown up almost identically. People born near a boundary are sometimes called "cuspers", and it's common for them to identify with both groups.

A Note on Generational Labels

Generation names are a useful shorthand for talking about shared experiences, such as the technology people grew up with, but they describe broad trends, not individuals. Pew Research Center itself cautions against reading too much into generational stereotypes.

How Old Is Each Generation in 2026?

Because each generation covers a range of birth years, its members span a range of ages. This table shows the age each group reaches on their birthday during 2026.

GenerationBornAge reached in 2026
Silent Generation1928–194581–98
Baby Boomers1946–196462–80
Generation X1965–198046–61
Millennials1981–199630–45
Generation Z1997–201214–29
Generation Alpha2013–20242–13
Generation Beta2025–20390–1

So if you are wondering how old Gen Z is, the answer in 2026 is 14 to 29. Generation X is 46 to 61, and Millennials are 30 to 45.

Worked Example

Someone born on 14 March 1992 falls inside the 1981–1996 range, so the calculator shows Millennial. They turned 34 in March 2026. Their younger sibling born in January 1997 is Generation Z, even though less than five years separate them. That is the boundary effect described above.

The Technology Each Generation Grew Up With

Generations are often described by the technology that was new when they were children. These are broad patterns, not rules for any individual:

  • Baby Boomers: television arriving in most homes.
  • Generation X: home video games and the first personal computers.
  • Millennials: the internet and mobile phones arriving during their school years.
  • Generation Z: smartphones and social media from childhood.
  • Generation Alpha: tablets, streaming and voice assistants from birth.
  • Generation Beta: growing up with AI tools as an everyday part of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are generation year ranges official?

No. There is no single official or legal definition of generation boundaries. This calculator uses commonly-cited approximations, but you may see slightly different year ranges from other sources.

Why do some sources give different generation names or years for me?

Different researchers and organizations define generational cutoffs differently, and cultural context varies by country. These labels are cultural shorthand, not scientific categories.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, this generation calculator is completely free to use with no sign-up required.

What is Generation Beta?

Generation Beta is an emerging, less-established term some researchers use for children born starting around 2025. As with all generation labels, this is not a fixed or official category.

What generation is someone born in 2000?

Someone born in 2000 is Generation Z, which covers people born from 1997 to 2012. They turn 26 in 2026.

What generation is someone born in 1995?

Someone born in 1995 is a Millennial. Millennials were born from 1981 to 1996, so a 1995 birth is near the younger end of the group.

How old are you if you are Gen X?

Generation X was born from 1965 to 1980, so Gen X members are between 46 and 61 years old during 2026.
