Born in January or February? Check the New Year Date
The Chinese zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. The calculator uses your birth year and shows a reminder if your birthday is in that window. Use the table below to confirm your animal: if you were born before the New Year date in your birth year, you belong to the previous year's animal.
For example, someone born on 5 February 1989 was born before that year's New Year (6 February 1989), so their animal is the Earth Dragon of 1988, not the Earth Snake of 1989.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is my Chinese zodiac animal determined?
Your zodiac animal is based on the lunar year of your birth. The twelve animals repeat in a fixed cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
Does Chinese New Year affect my zodiac animal?
Yes. The zodiac year starts on Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in that window, your animal may belong to the previous year - check the exact lunar date to be sure.
What is the Five Element shown in my result?
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water each pair with your animal on a ten-year cycle, adding a second layer of meaning on top of the twelve-year animal cycle.
Is the Chinese zodiac the same as Western astrology?
No. Western astrology tracks the sun's position across your birth month, while the Chinese zodiac assigns one animal per lunar year.
